DISCUSS PICTURE DAY
There’s no need to remind him or her to smile, stand up tall, or keep their eyes open. Our photographers are experts in getting natural and genuine smiles. (In fact, these types of instructions often make the process worse, because the child tries to do everything perfectly instead of just being natural in front of the camera!)
OUTFITS
The star of the picture is your child, and the outfit worn should always complement rather than distract. Dress your child in clothes that are comfortable, but clean and wrinkle-free. Layers are great – they photograph well! Try to stay away from small patterns such as checks or tiny polka dots, as they don’t show up in photos very well. Avoid clothing with logos or other words on them. And don’t forget shoes –it’s likely that your child’s full body will be photographed as a part of the session. Still, feeling nervous and want a fail-safe outfit option? Go for solids. A nice shirt in a single hue is a timeless option for school pictures and always helps your child’s smile remain the center of attention.
DRESSING SIBLINGS
Dress your children in coordinating colors, but not in matching outfits (or even in the same patterns). Pick a color scheme you like and then dress all of the children in similar colors. Some great combinations include pink, gray, and pale yellow or navy, red, and light blue.
HAIRSTYLES
Up or down? Cut several weeks before or the day before? To gel or not to gel? These are the questions that plague parents before Picture Day.
The good news is you’re probably overthinking the hair. Any hairstyle will do for Picture Day, as long as you and your child like it. If you love the freshly cut look, get a haircut as close to Picture Day as possible. If you prefer a little more natural style, get it a couple of weeks out so it has some time to grow back in.
- One exception would be cap & gown photos: Hair down is always best
